Central Executive Network (CEN)

The attention network that maintains sharp, directed focus — activated for goal-directed tasks and meta-attention.

The Central Executive Network (CEN) is a large-scale brain network that supports executive control, working memory, and directed attention. It includes the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, posterior parietal cortex, and other regions. When the CEN is active, the Default Mode Network tends to be suppressed — and vice versa.

Key Functions

  • Goal-directed attention — maintaining focus on a chosen object
  • Working memory — holding and manipulating information
  • Meta-attention — attending to the process of attention itself ("witness" mode)
  • Inhibition — suppressing irrelevant thoughts and distractions

In ONDA Life

Part 16 (I Witness) activates the CEN to maintain sharp, directed meta-attention — the ability to observe the one who is observing. This creates "neural distance" between the self and the stream of thoughts.
