Neural HardwareSCIENTIFIC TERM

Interoception

The sense of the internal state of your body — heartbeat, breathing, gut signals, temperature, hunger.

What is interoception?

Interoception is your body's ability to sense its own internal state — heartbeat, breathing, gut feelings, temperature, pain, hunger. ONDA's practice system starts from it.

Why Interoception First

ONDA Level 1 (TERRA) begins with interoception because:

  1. •It's the base layer — You cannot regulate what you cannot sense
  2. •Emotional awareness depends on it — Emotions are first felt as body sensations
  3. •It can be studied — Researchers measure it with heartbeat tasks and questionnaires, although these tools have known limits
  4. •Training evidence is mixed — One short experiment with heartbeat feedback improved scores, while a three-week training showed no significant gains

How ONDA Organizes Practice

This table is ONDA's own way of ordering its practices, not an established scientific framework.

| Layer | What You Sense | ONDA Part | |-------|---------------|-----------| | Basic | Heartbeat, breath, temperature | Part 1: I Exist | | Dynamic | Movement, balance, proprioception | Part 2: I Move | | Adaptive | Stress signals, energy levels, recovery | Part 3: I Adapt |

What the Research Shows

  • •Accuracy, sensibility and awareness are different things — how well you detect your heartbeat, how confident you feel about it, and how well those two match often correspond poorly (Garfinkel et al., 2015)
  • •Measurement is hard — the popular heartbeat counting task has serious validity problems
  • •No established anxiety link — a pre-registered meta-analysis found no association between cardiac interoceptive accuracy and anxiety (Adams et al., 2022)
  • •Practice is not a shortcut — experienced meditators are not better at heartbeat detection than non-meditators (Khalsa et al., 2008)
