Muse S Athena review

Updated 2026-05-21

8.5
/ 10

The most complete consumer brain-training headset — EEG plus fNIRS in a soft band you can sleep in.

Best for serious consumer brain-training users who want the deepest content library with sleep tracking included.

Muse S Athena is Interaxon’s 2024 flagship — a soft sleep-friendly headband combining four-channel dry EEG with prefrontal fNIRS oxygenation and overnight sleep tracking. Inherits the mature Muse meditation content library, adds the most ambitious sensor fusion in the consumer category, and unlike most premium devices ships without a mandatory subscription. The best all-rounder in EEG / brain-training in 2026.

How we tested: Evidence-based assessment — scored from Interaxon product documentation, published Muse EEG validation literature and independent 2026 reviews. Not hands-on tested by ONDA.

Signal quality and sensor pedigree

8.5

Four dry EEG electrodes plus prefrontal fNIRS optodes — the first consumer headset to fuse both signals in one device. Signal stability holds well during sit and lie-down sessions; a true research-grade reference it is not.

Training programmes and content

9.5

The deepest brain-training content library in the consumer space — guided meditations, breathwork, sleep journeys, focus sessions, mood tracking. Mature after a decade of iteration.

Insights and analysis quality

9.0

Per-session reports decompose meditation into calm, focus and active states; sleep staging combines EEG with movement. Best post-session analysis in this list.

Comfort and wearability

9.0

Soft fabric band designed for overnight wear — the only premium EEG headset in this list you can realistically sleep in.

App and integration UX

9.0

Polished iOS/Android app with Apple Health and Google Fit integration. Mature ecosystem after a decade of Muse releases.

Open data and developer access

6.0

Raw-EEG export available via Muse Direct (third-party app) but Interaxon’s first-party SDK is limited. Developer access lags Neurosity Crown by a wide margin.

Value

7.5

~$499 hardware, no mandatory subscription. Premium pricing but the only consumer device with EEG + fNIRS + sleep — and it does not lock features behind a paywall.

Pros

  • +EEG + fNIRS + sleep in a single soft band — unique in the consumer market
  • +The deepest brain-training content library after a decade of iteration
  • +No mandatory subscription — full feature set with the device purchase
  • +The only premium EEG headset comfortable enough for overnight sleep

Cons

  • First-party SDK is limited — developers reach for Neurosity Crown instead
  • Premium pricing — twice the cost of the entry Muse 2
  • Dry electrodes — adequate for consumer use, not research-grade
  • Sensor fusion (EEG + fNIRS) is still evolving in app interpretation

Price: $499 one-time; no mandatory subscription (as of 2026-05-21)

Where it leads

Muse S Athena is the most complete consumer brain-training headset in 2026. Interaxon kept everything that made the original Muse line work — soft headband, deep meditation content library, sleep-friendly form factor — and added two things almost no competitor has: prefrontal fNIRS oxygenation sensing alongside the four-channel EEG, and explicit sleep staging derived from the EEG signal itself. The combination is genuinely novel in the consumer space; the meditation, focus and sleep modules all draw on it.

Where it falls short

For developers and biohackers wanting raw signal access, this is the wrong tool. The first-party SDK is limited and Interaxon’s priority has consistently been polish over openness; Muse Direct exists for raw-EEG export but is third-party and clunky. Pure-EEG signal quality is also adequate rather than research-grade — these are dry electrodes in a soft band, not gelled clinical sensors.

Who it is for

Choose Muse S Athena if you want one consumer device that handles meditation, focus and sleep with the deepest content library in the market and no subscription gate. If raw EEG access is the deciding feature, Neurosity Crown is the right pick. If price is the deciding feature, Muse 2 covers most of the same meditation use case for half the cost.
