Insula

The insular cortex — the brain's primary hub for interoception, self-awareness, and emotional feeling.

The insula (or insular cortex) is a region of the cerebral cortex folded deep within the lateral sulcus. It is often called the "island" of the brain and serves as the primary hub for interoception and self-awareness.

Functions

  • Interoceptive awareness — sensing heartbeat, breath, gut
  • Emotional experience — translating body signals into felt emotions
  • Self-awareness — the neural basis of "I exist"
  • Empathy — simulating others' internal states

Relation to Insular Cortex

The terms "insula" and "insular cortex" refer to the same structure. The insula is the primary target of Level 1 interoceptive practices.
