The insula (or insular cortex) is a region of the cerebral cortex folded deep within the lateral sulcus. It is often called the "island" of the brain and serves as the primary hub for interoception and self-awareness.
Functions
- •Interoceptive awareness — sensing heartbeat, breath, gut
- •Emotional experience — translating body signals into felt emotions
- •Self-awareness — the neural basis of "I exist"
- •Empathy — simulating others' internal states
Relation to Insular Cortex
The terms "insula" and "insular cortex" refer to the same structure. The insula is the primary target of Level 1 interoceptive practices.
