NIR (Near Infrared) light spans approximately 700–1400 nm. Unlike visible light, NIR penetrates several centimeters into biological tissue, reaching muscles, joints, and deeper structures. It is used in photobiomodulation for mitochondrial support, pain relief, and recovery.
Key Properties
- •Penetration — 700–850 nm (red-NIR) penetrates ~2–5 cm; 850–1100 nm can go deeper
- •Targets — cytochrome c oxidase, hemoglobin, water
- •Non-thermal — PBM uses low irradiance; heating is minimal at typical doses
