Synaptic Connections

The junctions between neurons where signals are transmitted — the physical substrate of learning and memory.

Synaptic connections (synapses) are the points of contact between neurons where chemical or electrical signals are transmitted. They are the physical basis of learning, memory, and all behavioral change.

Key Principles

  • Plasticity — synapses strengthen or weaken with use
  • Hebb's rule — "neurons that fire together wire together"
  • Pruning — unused connections weaken; used ones strengthen
  • Reconsolidation — memories can be modified when recalled
