The short version
This splits by what you want. The Oura Ring 5 wins for the overnight number itself — finger measurement on redesigned sensors is more precise, and the 6–9 day battery makes all-night wear effortless. The Series 12 wins as a device — ECG, hypertension notifications, a screen, apps, no subscription — and its HRV is finally good enough to act on.
Why the numbers are now comparable
Earlier Apple Watches reported SDNN sampled sparsely, while Oura built on RMSSD. The Series 12’s Recovery HRV is RMSSD-based and sampled about 24× more often, so it is now the same kind of number Oura reports — though absolute values still differ between devices. See Recovery HRV vs Overall HRV and why HRV reads differently on every device.
The honest setup
For many people the answer is both: an Oura Ring for the hands-off overnight trend, and an Apple Watch for everything a ring can’t do. Already own a Ring 4? See Oura Ring 5 vs Ring 4. For the wider field, see the best HRV trackers of 2026.
