The short version
Muse S Athena is a meditation and sleep headband that happens to use EEG. Neurosity Crown is an EEG headset that happens to support focus training. If you want to practise and sleep better, choose Athena. If you want brain data you can work with, choose Crown.
What each one measures
EEG (electroencephalography) picks up tiny electrical signals from the brain through sensors on the scalp. The Crown has eight dry channels spread across the front, centre, top and back of the head, sampled 256 times per second. Athena has four EEG channels, mostly on the forehead and behind the ears, and adds fNIRS — light-based sensing of blood flow and oxygen in the front of the brain — plus heart rate.
More channels means more of the head is covered, which matters for research and custom apps. For guided meditation feedback, four well-placed channels are enough.
Practice and sleep: Athena
Athena’s strength is the app. It turns your brain signal into live sound — calm weather when your mind settles, louder when it wanders — across a large library of guided sessions. The soft band is comfortable enough to sleep in, and the headband tracks light, deep and REM sleep.
Core features work without a subscription. Some extras, such as Smart Wakeup, the AI coach and curated programs, need Muse Premium.
Data and building: Crown
The Crown is for people who want the data itself. Neurosity provides official JavaScript and Python SDKs, support for BrainFlow, LSL and OSC, and an MCP server that lets AI assistants read your live data if you allow it. There is no subscription. The trade-offs are price ($1,499), a rigid 228 g headset that is not made for sleep, and no meditation library.
What the evidence says
Consumer EEG can show broad changes in brain activity, such as more alpha when you relax, but it is not a medical test. Studies of consumer neurofeedback for focus and mood are small and mixed, so treat either device as a training aid, not a treatment. Bottom line
For most people, Muse S Athena is the better buy: more useful day to day, sleep tracking included and about a third of the price. Choose Neurosity Crown only if raw multi-channel EEG and an open SDK are the reason you are buying a headset.
